Passengers’ Body Proposes Mega Electric Loco Shed at Kanyakumari to Support South Ports
Strategic Rail Hub Proposed for Kanyakumari to Eliminate South Tamil Nadu Maintenance Vacuum
KANYAKUMARI: The Kanyakumari District Railway Passengers’ Association has submitted a comprehensive, strategic infrastructure proposal to the Ministry of Railways, calling for the time-bound establishment of a primary maintenance hub in the southern terminal region of Indian Railways. The association has earnestly requested the Railway Board and Southern Railway to formally sanction a Main Electric Locomotive Shed at Thenthamaraikulam Railway Station near Kanyakumari, urging authorities to entrust its execution to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited as part of the regional doubling and terminal augmentation project. In honor of the visionary statesman who championed regional rail growth in the early 2000s, the body has proposed naming the new facility the “Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Electric Locomotive Shed.”
The proposal opens with an expression of sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Railways and the Southern Railway administration for recently inviting tenders worth 101.82 Lakhs to construct a new Electric Locomotive Trip Shed at Nagercoil Junction. While this upcoming facility will greatly optimize short-turnaround locomotive utilization for trains originating from Nagercoil, the association notes that it cannot cater to major periodic schedules, heavy repairs, or overhaul requirements. Just as a pit line is vital for passenger coach maintenance, a trip shed is indispensable for inspecting, testing, and turning around electric locomotives within tight schedules, but it remains limited in scope.
As rail traffic expands exponentially in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, terminal maintenance assets have become critical, yet there is currently no Main Electric Locomotive Shed in the entire southern region of the state or within the Madurai Division. Existing primary loco sheds under Southern Railway, such as those located at Erode, Arakkonam, Royapuram, Tiruchchirappalli, Tondiarpet, Jolarpettai, and Ernakulam, are heavily concentrated along the northern boundaries of Tamil Nadu or within Kerala. This leaves a massive infrastructural vacuum in South Tamil Nadu, despite the milestone achievement of complete doubling and electrification across the Chennai–Tirunelveli–Nagercoil–Kanyakumari sections.
Geographically, Kanyakumari district serves as a vital gateway connecting the Western Coastal Route operating via Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Mangaluru with the Eastern Chord Route operating via Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli, and Chennai. Crucially, Thenthamaraikulam is centrally positioned to support heavy freight transportation between two major maritime hubs, namely the upcoming Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Port and the existing V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust in Thoothukudi. Fulfilling the high-volume freight movement expected from these ports requires heavy-haul locomotive availability backed by a localized primary maintenance hub.
In the early 2000s, the former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, recognized the strategic importance of this terminal region and strongly advocated for establishing dedicated locomotive infrastructure here. To realize this vision efficiently, the association requests that the establishment of the Main Electric Locomotive Shed at Thenthamaraikulam be formally included in the scope of the Nagercoil–Vanchi Maniyachchi–Madurai doubling project, which is currently being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. Because Indian Railways already holds vast tracts of unutilized, vacant surplus land at Thenthamaraikulam, the project is immediately feasible and cost-effective for Rail Vikas Nigam Limited to incorporate into its ongoing regional layout with zero land acquisition friction.
This infrastructure expansion will also ensure balanced administrative asset retention within the district, effectively preventing the relocation of vital technical facilities to neighboring states, as previously occurred when the Traction Power Controller office was moved away from Kuzhithurai. By establishing the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Electric Locomotive Shed, Indian Railways will eliminate the dead-mileage and operational overheads of sending locomotives to distant northern sheds, while triggering massive socio-economic and industrial growth across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
