A grand send-off to an honest and responsible railwayman & dedicated comrade
Comrade Vivek Nair steps down on 31st March from his meritorious service from the cadre of Station Manager
#Vivekanandhan_Nair, popularly known as “Comrade #Vivek_Nair” among the railway worker’s fraternity is set to step down from his service in Railways on 31st March, 2023 after a meritorious service of more than 37 years.
He joined railway service clearing competitive examination of #RRB for the post of Asst. Station Master (#ASM) in January 1986. He served in the Train Operation Department of Mumbai Division in Central Railway as ASM, Dy.Station Manager, Dy. Chief Yard Master, Signaling Cabin In-Charge and Station Manager in different stations/yards such as Mulund, Mulund Yard, Trombay Yard, Karjat, Kalyan Station, Kalyan Yard, Diwa Station, Diwa CTL Cabin, Dadar Main & Terminus Station, Dadar CTL cabin & Yard, Matunga Station, Sion Station and has discharged the responsibility of Traffic Inspector in the office of Senior Divisional Operation’s Manager (#SrDOM), Mumbai till 2013. It is imperative to say that he rendered his service uncompromisingly to railways through his assigned post with full dedication, sincerity and have always gained appreciation from the administration.
Com. Vivek Nair was an hardcore trade union activist of National Railway Mazdoor Union (#NRMU-CR/KR) since his appointment in Railway. He climbed the ladder of organizational position while continuing his selfless and relentless fight to protect the interest of the railway employees belonging to almost all departments not only of Mumbai Division but across all Divisions of Central Railway & Konkan Railway.
He discharged all the responsibilities entrusted to him by the union right from a Managing Committee Member of a Branch to Branch Asst. Secretary, Branch Secretary, Asst. Divisional Secretary & Asst. General Secretary. He was also part of the team formed by #NRMU (CR) to prepare draft memorandum presented in front of 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th CPC.
He actively intervened and contributed to the progressive career progression of several cadres of different departments especially of the Operating Department through 1993, 2003 & 2013 Cadre Restructuring Committee recommendations. He was also part of the delegation of #AIRF who presented oral evidence in front of different CPCs and was instrumental for the upgradation of the base pay level of Station Masters to (GP 4200/-) through 7th CPC, abolition of ‘Assistant’ from the designation of SM, Uniform allowance of Rs.10000/Per annum and in due course granting #MACP benefit of GP 5400/- as apex grade to them.
Under the guidance of the General Secretary/NRMU Com. Venu P. Nair, he has rendered his constructive contribution to protect the interest of different cadres of Commercial Department after the decision of Board to merge them, for formation of Track Machine Cadre, for the revision of the structure of Track Maintainers and to formulate strategies for protection of the pride and privilege of several other cadres from the threat of its extinction with rampant surrender of posts.
He was also entrusted by the union to work as Zonal Convenor of the Operating Staff Council of Central Railway whereby he successfully organised operating staff and brought them to the fold of NRMU (CR/KR) during his tenure.
He was also engaged to contribute for the betterment of the system as member of #PREM & Central Training Advisory Committee (#CTAC). He had an opportunity to visit Russia in 2019 as representative of NRMU (CR) in the all India delegation of AIRF to meet and interact with the Russian Railway employees.
He was fortunate to have abundant love and regards not only from former General Secretary Com. P. R. Menon but continued to gain it from the present General Secretary Com. Venu P Nair.
The path breaking incident of his trade union life was the historical all India “Stay in Strike” agitation of #Station_Masters done on 11.08.1997 which he led in Mumbai Division of Central Railway on the call of #AISMA with whole hearted solidarity and support extended by National Railway Mazdoor Union. The strike was so successful and has been considered as a milestone in terms of its impact that has delayed suburban and Mail/Exp. trains for hours together.
The negotiation process he led with management when the strike was at its peak, was so impressive that not a single Station Master of Mumbai Division victimised in the strike, whereas rampant victimization happened in that part of the country. He has also led a stoppage of work in 2005 at Kalyan to protest against the mishandling of train movements during the flood and the callousness of administration to render immediate medical attention to the employees who were assaulted and severely injured by the travelling public at that time.
