Hygienic & Odour free Waste Management in CR trains – Advanced Bio-Toilet AMI Testing Laboratory set up at Wadi Bunder
Mumbai: Central Railway has achieved a major milestone by commissioning an additional Bio-Toilet Anaerobic Microbial Inoculum (#AMI) Testing Laboratory at the Wadibunder Coaching Depot, Mumbai Division. This is part of its continuous pursuit of environmental sustainability, enhanced passenger hygiene and cleanliness.

Central Railway has achieved 100% bio-toilet fitment having provided approx. 22,306 Bio toilets in 5,509 Coaches of all 128 CR owned regular Mail & Express trains.
Bio-Toilets- Introduction
Conventional train toilets discharged untreated human waste directly onto the railway tracks, causing infrastructure corrosion, environmental challenges, and hygiene issues. To eliminate this, Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), developed and introduced the innovative Bio-Toilet System.
Bio-toilets are an eco-friendly waste management solution fitted beneath passenger coaches. The system operates on green technology using a special anaerobic microbial bacterial inoculum.
When human waste enters the bio-tank:
- The anaerobic bacteria biologically decompose the solid waste.
- The waste is converted entirely into biogas (which vents safely away) and odourless water.
- This eliminates direct discharge on tracks, preventing foul odours, and ensuring cleanliness.
Inoculum Testing:
For proper monitoring of bio-toilet system, inoculum samples are drawn from the bio-toilets as per the trial scheme to check the quality of anaerobic microbial inoculum bacteria in tanks.
Various parameters such as pH, Bio-gas formation, Inflammability test, Methane percentage, Most probable number for Methanogens count, Total solids etc are measured to determine the quality of the effluent. The findings highlight the performance and charging of additional bacteria if required.
The New State-of-the-Art Lab at Wadibunder
Anaerobic Microbial Inoculum (#AMI) is the core component of the Bio-digester Technology used in Indian Railways coaches. The efficiency and effectiveness of the bio-toilet system largely depend upon the quality of the AMI used. Poor quality AMI can lead to incomplete decomposition of human waste, thereby rendering the bio-digester effluent unsuitable for safe discharge into the environment. Therefore, ensuring the quality and reliability of AMI is of utmost importance for maintaining environmental hygiene and operational efficiency.
The AMI Testing Laboratory at Wadibunder Coaching Depot is one of the first facilities of its kind in the open line system of Indian Railways. It is uniquely equipped with all essential testing machines and equipment under one roof for comprehensive assessment of AMI performance parameters. The facility possesses adequate infrastructure, modern instruments, and qualified technical manpower to ensure accurate testing of AMI samples as per CAMTECH standards and specifications.
Central Railway initially set up its first specialized bio-toilet testing laboratory at the Wadibunder Coaching Depot in June 2025. However, to meet the rapidly rising volume of train services and sample loads, Central Railway has formally set up and operationalized one additional testing laboratory at the Wadibunder Coaching Depot in April 2026.
The laboratory is capable of handling AMI sample testing requirements for all coaching depots of Central Railway, thereby serving as a centralized testing hub for ensuring consistent quality standards.
The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated equipments including—
- Gas Chromatograph
- Laminar Air Flow Chamber
- BOD Incubator
- Bacteriological Incubator
- Gassing Manifold
- Magnetic Stirrer with Hot Plate
- Autoclave
As Bio-digester Technology directly deals with the treatment of human waste, maintaining acceptable effluent quality is essential from the environmental hygiene and public health perspective. Regular and systematic testing of AMI samples helps in identifying quality-related issues at an early stage and acts as an effective alarm mechanism for initiating timely corrective measures.
The establishment of this state-of-the-art AMI Testing Laboratory at Wadibunder Coaching Depot has strengthened Central Railway’s efforts in providing Bio-toilet facilities in its trains and ensuring a hygienic and clean waste management system for passengers travelling on board.
Benefits of Bio-toilet to passengers
- Bio-Toilets project a hygienic, clean and no-messy look.
- No accumulation and unpleasant odour since human waste is decomposed by bacteria.
- Cleaner and better-maintained toilets improve overall onboard travel comfort, especially during long-distance journeys.
- Bio-toilet systems are designed for continuous use during extended journeys, helping maintain sanitation standards throughout the trip.
- Biological treatment of waste inside tanks ensures conversion of waste into gas and plain water which has ensured cleaner tracks and station areas.
- Cleaner tracks and station surroundings reduce exposure to harmful pathogens and improve sanitation for passengers, railway staff, and nearby communities.
- Better sanitation facilities enhance dignity, convenience, and satisfaction for passengers across all categories of travel.
- Bio-toilets contribute to cleaner railway premises and align with the mission of “Swachha Bharat Swachh Rail”.
Central Railway appeals to passengers to:
- Always press the flush button or use the health faucet/mug sufficiently after use. Water helps the bacteria effectively process the waste and pushes it smoothly into the bio-digester tank.
- Keep the toilet pan lid closed when not in use to maintain the necessary anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions for the bacteria and to prevent any remaining odours from entering the coach.
- Avoid throwing plastic bottles, polythene bags, sanitary napkins, diapers, gutkha/pan masala pouches, cloth, paper cups, or metal objects into the toilet pan. These items completely choke the system and render the toilet unusable.
- Avoid flushing leftover food, tea cups, or plastic food wrappers down the toilet. Dustbins provided inside the coach vestibules should be used instead.
- Report immediately to the Coach Attendent, Train Ticket Examiner or via the RailMadad app / Helpline (139) in case the toilet is choked, overflowing, or emitting an unusual foul smell.
#CentralRailway remains deeply dedicated to the national mission of a “Clean & Green India,” and this endeavour reflects its commitment towards technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and improved passenger sanitation systems.
