100 Years of Electric Traction in Indian Railways: South Eastern Railway Celebrates with a Grand Seminar

Kolkata: On 3rd February 2025, South Eastern Railway (#SER) hosted a seminar at its headquarters in the Garden Reach, Kolkata to celebrate 100 years of #ElectricTraction in #IndianRailways. This event was part of the nationwide celebrations, which included various activities such as quiz competitions, technical seminars, sports events, and more, across all divisions of SER.

The seminar was attended by the General Manager of SER, PHODs, HODs, and senior officers from SER. It reflected on the transformative journey of electric traction, beginning with India’s first electric-powered train journey on 3rd February 1925, between #CSMT and #Kurla in Mumbai.

A special presentation highlighted key milestones of electric traction over the last 100 years, emphasizing how it has revolutionized rail transport, making it more efficient and eco-friendlier. The General Manager acknowledged the contributions of engineers, workers, and visionaries in shaping electric traction’s success and reiterated Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainability and net-zero carbon emissions.

Discussions during the seminar also focused on the future of electric traction, with insights into the integration of AI and renewable energy to enhance efficiency and reliability. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of Indian Railways’ commitment to building a modern, sustainable rail network.
