All officers post of CORE & COFMOW is proposed to be surrendered

Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) and Central Organisation For Modernization Of Workshops (COFMOW) are proposed to be wound up by December 2023.

Because CORE will be redundant after full Electrification of existing railway tracks of 16882 kms for which work is in progress while COFMOW has already lost relevance now.

COFMOW was established under the Ministry of Railways for modernizing Railway workshops. The modernization project was funded through World Bank credits. Since its establishment in 1979 COFMOW has assisted in modernizing Indian Railways Production Units and maintenance workshops. This has involved purchasing over 22020 machines valued at Rs. 6,274 Crores. It has thus emerged as a leading specialised organisation in the fields of manufacturing and maintenance technologies.

The CORE was established in 1979 under the Ministry of Railways with the prime objective of electrification of railway tracks over the Indian Railways, it has electrified 45,881 Route kilometers (RKM) that is about 71% of the total Broad-Gauge (BG) network of Indian Railways (64,689 RKM, including Konkan Railway) by March 31, 2021. CORE plans to electrify all BG routes of Indian Railway by December 2023.

The proposal recommends handing over all other existing contracts of both of these organisations to respective Zones while the remaining work be handed out as EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contracts.

All officers post in these organisations is proposed to be surrendered as per internal discussions between Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) and Ministry of Railways (Railway Board).

As per internal discussion, most of the officers opinion is that the wound up and surrendering of the posts of officers of both of these organisations should be done as soon as possible.
