Unfulfilled Railway wishes in between 2014-24
The past 10 years have been unimpressive largely owing to the flawed policies of the past 25 years that the Government was burdened with, but there is a silver lining that these may be buried for good
The list is quite long:
- KashmirRailLink: Incomplete after 22 years as it turns out to be the costliest and most useless line in the world.
- Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (#DFCs) Even the #WesternDFC remains incomplete while the fate of the eastern half of the #EasternDFC is in limbo.
- MA Standard Gauge Bullet Train line: With the original #TDC of 2023, progress is less than 20% as cost is ballooning to make this the costliest #HSR line in the world in a non-mountainous terrain.
- Raising speed on Delhi-Howrah & Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani routes to 160 kmph and introducing Vande Sleeper trains.
- Underutilisation of the #VandeBharat trains. None of the trains averages 110-120 kmph that is expected of a 160 kmph #EMU type train. Several trains average <75 kmph. This too is a result of the failure to raise #speed under #MissionRaftaar.
- The average #speed & #punctuality hasn’t shown improvement: Another outcome of the failure of Mission Raftaar.
- None of the other six Himalayan projects is anywhere near completion.
- Both #Passenger and#Freight traffic of #IndianRailways has continued to decline since 2016 while #IR is rapidly losing the market share to road & air.
What about the successes?
The above-mentioned ill-conceived ideas of #RailwayBoard seem to have been put on hold like more DFCs, more #StandardGauge #BulletTrain lines, more lines in the #Himalayas on Railway Board’s deeply flawed #alignment-methodology, particularly the plans for line to #Leh and the #CharDham lines.
The need of the hour is a clean break from the ill-conceived plans and ideas that have stymied rail in India.
