Now BRDS alerts the track maintainers in case of the rail breakage

The system generates the alarm for breakage, system faulty, sensor faulty and fitment intact messages to the network

The network server will then push these alerts to various user groups as per requirement

Introduction of Broken Rail Detection System (#BRDS) by Central Electronics Limited (#CEL), a Government of India PSU under Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology.

#BRDS is a system designed to alert the maintainer/user in case of the rail fracture or breakage. The alert is generated immediately on breakage of the rail in the 500 m vicinity and which rail is broken.

The pin point information of rail and approx. 500 m distance ensures that requisite maintenance can be undertaken immediately without any loss of property or lives.

The prototype of the system is installed in the Magenta Line between Shaheen Bagh #Metro Station and Okhla Station of #DMRC network. DMRC have now given CEL LoA for implementing 11 km of elevated track of Magenta line after monitoring and testing at the prototyping stage.

Broken Rail Detection System

The system consists of the following sub components-

1. Track Side Electronic Unit
2. Track Sensors
3. IOT Intelligence Device
4. Data Center System

System Working

The system monitors all the four rails simultaneously using an Optical network. The proven and patented sensors are mounted at regular intervals to define various zones. These zones can vary between 250m to 500m currently depending on the track layout. Each Zone is identified with zone id.

All these trackside electronics are connected to dedicated optical network. All the wayside stations will be connected to this network.

The nearby stations are provided with hooters and LEDs to generate alerts to nearby stations along with the affected zone.

Broken Rail Detection System

The system generates the alarm for breakage, system faulty, sensor faulty and fitment intact messages to the network. The network server will then push these alerts to various user groups as per requirement.

The system works on 220 V AC from uninterrupted sources.

Project Status

Prototype installation in one section of magenta line of DMRC and cleared all the basic functionality.

#DMRC has given letter of award (LoA) for implementation of 11 km in elevated track of magenta line of their network.

Feasibility study of similar Technology in main line is under progress.
