National Energy Conservation awards 2025 to NCR

Prayagraj: On the occassion of the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025, Electric loco shed (#ELS) Kanpur was awarded the certificate of Merit for best innovation in the transport sector.

It is known that #ELS Kanpur took a lead in the elimination of the harmonic filter assembly from the three phase IGBT based locomotives.

This lead to a saving of ₹3700 crore from the electricity savings only while the savings including the capital costs are in excess of ₹5000 crores.

It was a brilliant collaboration of the academia and the industry as IIT Kanpur and locoshed kanpur initiated a study on the utility of the harmonic filter assembly in the three phase locomotives.

It was a highly failure prone assembly with reported cases of failure being in excess of 300 per year.

There were cases of fires on account of its capacitor bursting as well.

The study was referred to #RDSO which directed by North Central Railway (#NCR) to conduct further studies and in september it was decided to remove the filter from 5333 locos.

The rest manufacturers were asked to reform their locos and again rigrous tests were carried out and now the unit stands eliminated from the 9000+ strong fleet of the Indian Railways.

PCEE/NCR Yatendra Kumar and SrDEE/TRS/CNB Rahul Tripathi collected the award in vigyan bhawan from minister of Power Manohar Lal Khattar and ministet of MNRE Shripad Yeso Nayak.
